The function of normative process-requirements

30. Juni 2011 von Julian Fink

Process-requirements are thought to fulfil two essential functions within a system of normative requirements. These functions are considered to prove the existence of process-requirements. First, process-requirements are thought to ensure that a normative requirement source can guide our deliberations and actions. Second, their existence is regarded as necessary for explaining the fact that we possess a certain degree of a normative or evaluative property, such as morality, prudence, rationality, etc., in virtue of the processes we undergo. However, I argue that these two functions are unable to prove the existence of process-requirements. Instead, I propose a different essential function for process-requirements: they are necessary to attribute the correct degree of a normative property to a subject who is not entirely as she ought to be. This function, I argue, necessitates the existence of process-requirements.
